Are There Different Types Of Data Centers?

Every data center is different and will offer different solutions built to the client’s needs and specifications. In this sense, each data center is unique. That said, they will fall into one of four categories.

What Are Data Center Tiers?

Data center service is classified by four tiers. Each tier reflects the complexity, amount of expected uptime and level of service provided, with tier 1 being the simplest service and tier 4 being the most advanced. Most data center companies will have different tiers available to choose from, which will impact the final price of the service.

Here’s how these four tiers are generally defined:

  • Tier 1: Estimated uptime of 99.671% (28.8 hours of downtime a year). Tier 1 service offers a single pathway for power and cooling components and there is rarely any redundancy or backup components available.
  • Tier 2: Expected uptime of 99.741% (22 hours downtime per year). Mostly similar to tier 1 service, except there may be some backup components available.
  • Tier 3: Expected to only be down for 1.6 hours a year because there are systems in place to maintain service, even during an update or maintenance. There are multiple sources of power and cooling.
  • Tier 4: These data centers are constructed to be impervious. There is almost no downtime, only 26.3 minutes a year, on average, and every component has redundancy and backups available.

How Are Data Centers Cooled?

With all of this IT equipment powered on and running in a single space, cooling is an important aspect of data center infrastructure. Without proper cooling, the systems can quickly overheat and cause damage and unexpected downtime.

Data centers arrange equipment in hot and cold rows, which help them better control areas of hot and cold air. A powerful HVAC system is then used to pump in more cold air and keep the room’s temperature controlled. Advanced data centers will also have exhausts strategically placed near the hot rows to pull that warm air out of the room.
